At least 16 people, including five women and five children, died when a Syrian 13-year civil war imported ordnance exploded in the coastal city of Latakia. The blast happened Sunday morning in a ground floor metal scrap storage location. Rescue crews stayed on duty throughout the night, salvaging bodies from debris and tending to the injured.
“It’s highly destructive”, a White Helmets spokesperson said. “We expect more casualties would be trapped under the rubble.
This accident highlights the ongoing threat posed by unexploded ordnance in Syria. The United Nations reports, greater than 100 have been killed over the last few years by such gadgets. In the past year since Bashar Assad’s regime fell in December, more than 1,400 explosive remnants have been removed across main areas including Latakia.
In another incident, the Syrian Defense Ministry accused the Lebanese Hezbollah in the killing of three Syrian soldiers near the Lebanon-Syrian border. Hezbollah rejected involvement, but tensions remain high along the northeastern Lebanese town of Al-Qasr, where it was reported that the Syrian army have shelled earlier.
Latakia, and important port city has become increasingly violence since the fall of Assad regime, where regular clashes and retaliatory fire have caused heavy casualties and destruction.
