The Dalai Lama yesterday made a recycled comment on his successor, stating in his latest book, Voice for the Voiceless, that the next Dalai Lama will be born outside of China. This saying fuels further the tension between the Tibetan spiritual leader and Beijing, who insists of the control of the reincarnation process.

At 89, the Dalai Lama remains an important figure for Tibetans globally, who have urged the next generation to take on the line of his successors. Though he had mentioned before that the Dalai Lama might divide and pass into different lives he is holding that would be the first written declaration he has made that he will reclaim his incarnation in the “free world” beyond China’s jurisdiction.
By his own prediction – “The new Dalai Lama will come in the free world and will be there to carry on this mission of universal compassion, the wishes of the Tibetan people”
China, which dubs him a “separatist”, dismissed his claims, saying only Beijing can pick his successor. The Tibetan Parliament-in-exile in India dismissed China’s requirement to the Dalai Lama to acknowledge Tibet and Taiwan as a single part of China.
Handled by international heroes such as Richard Gere and Nancy Pelosi, the Dalai Lama stays a representative of Tibetan determination. Even though the prospects of him attaining freedom remain bleak he is a dream of returning to Tibet. His new book, published today, will doubtless sharpen the debate about Tibet’s fate.
