Clash Turns Deadly: JCD Leader Dies Amid BNP Factional Violence in Bangladesh

A leader of local Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, student wing of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), died in a clash between two BNP factions as he succumbed to serious injuries. The violence began when the Water Development Board’s workers began building an embankment.

The deceased, Md Rashed, 27, was an ex-general secretary of a union-level JCD committee. He died en route to Dhaka City’s Chandrima Hills Polliclinic, according to Monpura Police Station officer-in-charge, Sanpura, Ahsan Kabir, as quoted by The Daily Star.

The altercation started in South Sakuchia Union’s Ward-9 at Nuruddin Bazar through Wednesday morning. Eyewitnesses and police sources said the clashes were a result of a long running feud between the two BNP factions over the construction of the embankment.

At least 10 people from both sides were also injured during the clash.

Police reports say that the clash was also witnessed by ruling Awami League supporters. Rashed family made a formal claim, official operations have been launched to arrest those accountable for the force.

The incident has stoked up local politics with local leaders demanding an investigation and tougher measures to cut fighting.

The situation is still being closely watched by the authorities as the project of embankment continues to be a contentious issue of political rivalries at the area.
