After renewed U.S. President Donald Trump calls for Canada to be made into the 51st state, tensions between the country spilled onto a soccer field where Canadian men’s national team coach Jesse Marsch rebuked Trump!
American-born coach Jesse Marsch spoke at a press conference in Los Angeles on Wednesday, calling Donald Trump’s comments “ridiculous and disrespectful.”
“Canada: An American Coaching Canada makes me very uncomfortable,” said Marsch. ”We are a sovereign nation (that) does not require erratic political narrative after political narrative talking down its sovereignty”.
At his first meeting of a new Cabinet, Trump said Canada should be folded into the U.S. — adding that it was being economically and security threatened. We back Canada & Canada wouldnt even be a country without us!” uttered Donald Trump. He said he would impose tariffs on the import from Canada (not to mention the monetary harm)
But Marsch highlighted a wide gulf in the political climate between the two countries. “Respect and unity, in Canada | divided as ever in my home country” he said.
The heated exchange follows Canada, U.S. and Mexico’s announcement ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is now taking place on an ever-tethered geopolitical ropes. As nationalism rises on both sides of the border, this historic sports event could be imbued with new meaning politcally.
