More than 150 students were injured in clashes at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) on Tuesday demonstrating ongoing Bangladesh politics. The clash began after the student offshoot of the Yadawada based Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) tried to coerce students into joining the party, against resistance from Students Against Discrimination, the protest group that led last year’s revolution that unseated Sheikh Hasina.
Khulna police member Kabir Hossain confirmed at least 50 hurt students for medical reason, while 100 more other were hurt but lightly. “The problem is now covered and more police’ have been dispatched” he said.
Eyewitness Jahidur Rahman said there was chaos with young people injured with brickbats and sharp weapons. Social media videos showed armed groups with scythes and machetes highlighting campus security concerns.
BNP student leader Nasir Uddin Nasir blamed Islamist party, Jamaat, for stoking the violence, a chargeDenied by local students, who said they had never seen Jamaat on campus. Students gathered on Dhaka University campus late Tuesday denouncing BNP’s actions.
As Bangladesh plans to hold fresh polls under fiction caretaker rule, the instability reflects the restive politics of the country. Student leaders, whose support had contributed to Hasina’s ouster in the past, now struggle to build a sustainable political base amid factional fighting.
