Brazil’s Former President Jair Bolsonaro has been accused of having thrown a coup to stay in power after he lost an election last year.
The indictment, issued by Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet, states Bolsonaro, and along with 33 others planned to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes and kill President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva with poison
The prosecutor said the “Green and Yellow Dagger” is a plot to weaken national institutions foreseen at Villa La Joia, the presidential palace. Gonet, 272 pages () described Bolsonaro as a supporter of the plot and had known about it
Federal Police had earlier submitted 884-page document detailing their efforts to instigating social unrest in the city, urging for military officers to support the coup and maintain doubts about the election system of Brazil. According to the defence, the crimes allegedly committed were to null the electoral result and preserve Bolsonaro in government.
Bolsonaro laughed off the allegations, announcing: “I have no apprehensions regarding the accusations, none.” Bolsonaro is innocent of anything wrong Wajngarten has not yet commented officially on.
If Supreme Court agrees with the accusations, the 33 co-defendants of Bolsonaro – who will stand trial for crimes including planning a coup, creating an armed group of robbers and attempting to elude the country’s democratic order. Experts point to trial commencing within the bounds of a year for a more detailed reveal of Brazil’s will to preserve democracy.
Nevertheless, Bolsonaro has not been ruled out of the 2026 race by disqualification polls showing he is still an active politician.
