India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took control of Delhi’s political power after decade-long Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leadership ended. The BJP collected 48 out of the total 70 assembly seats in the Delhi election defeating the AAP to win just 22 seats. On February 9 of 2025 the BJP returned to control the national capital territory after an absence of two decades.

AAP suffered a critical loss since it posed itself as an anti-establishment party based on direct grassroots involvement. AAP lost its leadership when both Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia failed to win their seats and they faced defeat alongside outgoing Chief Minister Atishi who barely maintained her seat. For the third time in a row the Congress party failed to secure any election victories during this election period.
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared the victory signaled Delhi residents’ rejection of the AAP “conscious deception” while pledging to build a contemporary metropolis. Despite a minimal 2% gap in voting preferences between them the BJP succeeded in winning elections through its messages about development and governmental transparency.
Kejriwal approved of the election results even after his resignation as Delhi Chief Minister in September 2024 following bail in corruption charges and promised to act as a constructive opposition force for the public.
The election results demonstrate a fundamental transformation in Delhi politics because residents chose reliable government and stability instead of empty popular policies. The BJP achieved victory that solidifies its position across urban areas but AAP must now consider its next steps politically. The BJP will need to fulfill its campaign promises to residents of Delhi while selecting a new Chief Minister to handle police and public service functions.
This result is seen as a reflection of broader political trends in India, where the BJP continues to consolidate its influence, while regional parties like AAP face growing challenges in maintaining their appeal.
