Bangladesh’s Student Revolutionaries Form New Political Party Amid Rising Tensions

Dhaka University, in the context of Bangladesh, has witnessed the face of a new political force Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad, (GCsG) Student Council formally unveiling its platform. The group is comprised of key coordinators from Students Against Discrimination (SAD) the till last year’s rebellion that saw former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to step down.

The establishment of the party has widened political schisms and with some accusing its leaders of betraying the revolution. The plank unveiling event on February 26 turned violent after leadership and representation disputes led to physical fights among its members.

Notably the new group has students previously linked to Awami League’s youth wing. However, its leader Zahid Ahsan said that none of his organization was part of any violent activities against the revolution. We are for student rights and we will follow the spirit of the speed with which the dictatorship has been conquered, has been broken.

Splitting the student movement further, another faction of SAD–consisting of members who joined the interim government would be announcing a new party on February 28.

In the meantime Sheikh Hasina stays in India in exile with arrest warrants for crimes against humanity. The political situation remains unpredictable with Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, chief of the caretaker administration, planning for the coming polls, due late 2025 or early 2026. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party is predicted to pick up the most votes in the elections, in general.

With the recent student clashes leaving more than 150 injured the unrest intensifies and grows, warning of an unpredictable and uncertain road for Bangladesh’s future.
