Bangladesh Rewrites History Books Amid Political Shifts, Erasing Hasina-Era Legacy

The recent removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s regime through a student revolution in 2015 requires Bangladesh to rewrite its history textbooks as part of the new national political environment. This new educational content presented to students this month omits mentions of Hasina’s father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman whose name was historically linked to Bangladesh’s creation but now focuses on formerly suppressed political figures from Hasina’s administration.

The newly published textbooks delete all speeches together with poems and images featuring Mujib who was killed in 1975 as well as his current exiled daughter Hasina. The textbooks now honor Ziaur Rahman who served as both military chief and opposition leader after Hasina removed him from public memory during her previous government term. Ziaur Rahman established the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) as the main political opponent of Hasina while declaring Bangladesh’s independence in 1971.

Several commentators believe the new history modifications create an endless pattern of political distortions in academic records. Each new government administration introduces unacceptable textbook revisions according to Suraiya Akhtar Jahan a member of the parental society. AKM Riazul Hassan leads the curriculum reform agency by explaining the purpose behind the alterations to ensure people do not remain stuck in continuous hatred toward each other.

Religious sensitivities now affect the educational content because it deletes information about transgender experiences while presenting Islamist movement activities in a lesser light. The nation’s future through its post-Hasina period finds representation in reconstructed school textbooks which show how Bangladesh shapes its identity while trying to match present needs with historical lessons.
