Huge scale avalanche hit Himalayan state Uttarakhand, India Avalanche buried dozens of laborers in heavy snow. The Indian Army along with multiple rescue squads rescued 46 people successfully but unfortunately, eight lives were lost.
The authorities confirmed that the last missing body recovered at 4:43 PM on Sunday marking the end of an extensive search operation. The avalanche occurred in Mana, a far-flung village close to the India-China border, were workers from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) were present.
Emergency response teams comprising the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National and State Disaster Response Forces (NDRF & SDRF) and local authorities fought against the unfavourable weather and difficult terrain to carry out the rescue.
District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari of Chamoli had stated that all legal formalities were done and bodies were being handed over to families. Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, complimented the teams for unity, referring the mission as “a reflection of the strength of India’s disaster management.”
The mishap brings to the fore the risks associated with labor working at great heights in areas more likely to avalanches, raising questions on safety measures for such individuals.
