In the wake of Australia warning international airlines about Chinese warship live-fire exercises in Tasman Sea, it has caused some flights change their routes.
Penny Wong, Foreign Minister said that Airservices Australia (the Australian aviation regulator) had advised pilots of the dangers in air space between Australia & New Zealand.
Reports say that three Chinese naval vessels are conducting drills in international waters near Australia’s east coast.
“Authorities are supposed to warn pilots when big military exercises are going on. spokesperson Wong said Airservices Australia was rightly acting to ensure aviation safety.
The ABC reported that at least some international flights have already rerouted to steer clear of the region of concern.
Australian military, combined with naval ships for days have been keeping a close watch on the movements of the Chinese fleet.
Talks are also in progress between Australia and China on transparency and notification measures for such military activities, especially live firing.
The recent exercises are carried out at a time of heightened regional tensions and heightened presence of the Chinese military in far- off international waters.
Australian officials emphasize the need for transparency in communications so misunderstandings do not arise and both civil and military operations are safe in the area.
The fact they are still within international law however has some eye-rolling in regards to how China might be exercising its maritime muscle further south from Australian territory.
