The Saudi Teaching Maternal Hospital in El Fasher experienced one of Sudan’s most brutal attacks when rebel forces from RSF killed 70 people during the country’s civil conflict. The rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) conducted the Saturday, January 25 assault on the Saudi Teaching Maternal Hospital in El Fasher according to local officials told by World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
During the siege the North Darfur capital had only one operating medical facility which was completely full with patients. A 70-person death toll with 19 injuries among patients and hospital visitors marked the terrible attack according to social media post author Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. He publicly denounced the hospital assault while demanding that healthcare facilities become immune from attack right away.
The capital El Fasher has experienced continuous RSF blockade starting in May 2024 forcing its citizens to live through repeated violations of their human rights during a span of months. The RSF head Clementine Nkweta-Salami disclosed that the government militia presented opposing forces with a 48-hour deadline to leave the city implying planned military growth.
The RSF has refused to recognize this attack. The group has faced recent military failures as its forces lost control of Sudan’s biggest Khartoum refinery to the Sudanese military.
Since its origins in April 2023 the civil war continues to take over 28,000 lives while driving millions of people from their homes. Since democrat activist Omar al-Bashir lost power in 2019 Sudan entered a period of instability which resulted in ethnic warfare and extensive humanitarian catastrophe.
The urgent demand for peace and civilian protection continues while Sudan encounters a growing human catastrophe.
