Cuba has experienced another massive power outage, affecting millions of people in of several provinces. Blackout, which began Friday night at about 8:15 p.m., started with a loss at the Diezmero substation in the Havana area and a failure in the National Electric System was caused.
The Ministry of Energy and Mines acknowledged the power outage happening, saying power failures went beyond Havana into Guantanamo, Artemisa, Santiago de Cuba and Santa Clara. Many streets in the capital were plunged into complete darkness, the only light being provided by hotels that had generators. Even internet service was knocked offline, further cutting residents off from the world.

As authorities said rescue efforts were in progress, people are growing impatient. Preceding blackouts in 2021, 2022 and 2024 prompted big citizen protests, embodying increasing public frustration with the nation’s weak energy system.
To mitigate the crisis, the government has started a solar energy project intending to set up photovoltaic parks this year. But with repeated power failures bringing life to a grinding halt, not many Cubans believe when they will have a steady power supply back.
