A flight going to New Delhi from American Airlines had to make an emergency landing in Rome on Sunday due to a bomb threat that was reported as the flight took off. Flight AA292, which was operated by 199 passengers from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, was diverted to Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport after a bomb threat emailed, a source with knowledge of the incident said.
The threat, considered “non-credible” following an investigation, caused the crew to be forced to request a diversion as the plane flew over the Caspian Sea, around three hours from Rome. Italian authorities rapidly worked with the landing, as two Italian Air Force jet fighter escorted the plane into Italian territory. The airplane safely touched down at 17:30 local time.
“Security and safety are our highest concern,” American Airlienes said in a statement and apologizes for the distress caused to the passengers. Local law enforcement met the craft at its arrival with a thorough inspection, allowed it to depart. It is expected that after rest of the crew flight will go to New Delhi.
Passengers remained calm during the ordeal, one passenger Yash Raj complimented on the crew’s handling of the situation. “We were informed about a safety issue but not precisely a threat,” Raj said. “Very efficient job carried out by the team.”
The airport operations in Rome were not disrupted by the diversion. Police are still trying to find the origin of threat.
