Al Green Censured for Disrupting Trump’s Speech, Sparks Democratic Outcry

The U.S. House of Representatives officially censured Texas Democrat Al Green on Thursday, after he was booted out for noisy interruptions of President Donald Trump’s speech to the nation.

Green, 77, shook his cane and bellowed when Trump spoke on March 4, and refused to take a seat despite cautions. He was ejected from the chamber, leading to an immediate reaction from Democratic lawmakers.

We passed a censure resolution, introduced by Rep. Dan Newhouse, to promote decorum and order in the Congress. “This gross dereliction of protocol is outrageous,” Newhouse said.

The disruption was part of a larger Democratic protest with lawmakers walking out, crying, and carrying signs in disgust of anyway Trump. The White House said it was up to Democrats who are fostering “chaos and hate.”

Although several Democrats opposed the censure, some by only a few supported it. Senator John Fetterman condemned the disruption, saying it was exactly what Trump wants. “It makes him appear more presidential,” he stated on X.

Green, however, remained resolute. Before the vote, he and colleagues sang “We Shall Overcome.” He then stated, “I fought for those who need Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security. The Senate Democrats never going to quit on this fight.”

Censure resolutions, once virtually nonexistent, have become more frequent, symbolizing stark divisions between the two parties in Washington. The resolution is a public reprimand but has no additional consequences.
