A night of superlatives tragedy after a devastating roof collapse at the world renowned Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo resulted in at least 44 deaths and 160 injuries leaving a hexagonal shape across the country of the Dominican Republic. The disaster happened when a packed merengue concert was interrupted early Tuesday, has held several political figures and celebrities were under the rubble.
Rescue operations lasted nearly 12 hours as emergency workers worked around the clock to extract survivors from the debris. “We think that there are a lot of more people potentially alive under the rubble, and we are keeping working,” said Juan Manuel Méndez, Director of Emergency Operations.
Among the casualties was Nelsy Cruz, governor of Montecristi, sister to baseball legend Nelson Cruz was fatally injured whilst attempting to muster some aid, swapping in the hospital. Former professional baseball player Octavio Dotel, lawmaker Bray Vargas and merengue superstar Rubby Pérez – who was on stage performing when the roof collapsed – are reported injured.
Eyewitnesses talked of scenes of chaos and bravery. Pérez’s manager, Enrique Paulino, recalled, “It seemed like an earthquake. I sunk in the corner to survive.

The cause of the collapse is still being looked into by authorities. President Luis Abinader, who inspected the site, offered the complete support to the families and members of victims’ families saying, “We come united in grief and in hope.”
Jet Set today released a statement expressing deep sadness and offering full cooperation to the investigation.
This is still one of the deadliest nightclub disasters in the country’s history.
