The United States and the united kingdom are to become trailblazers as FIFA holds fire on their bids to stage the 2031 and 2035 women’s world cups, shaping a new history for the women’s game.
For the first time since 2003, the US is going to receive the tournament back, with talks that Mexico may participate as a co-host. In the meanwhile, England is gearing to head the 2035 edition, marking it the very first FIFA World Cup to be hosted on British ground since 1966.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino said that the U.S. is still the only 2031 candidate, all but guaranteeing a victory. U.K. 2035 bid also has no competition with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in support of the proposal.
In another historic move FIFA has recommended increasing the number of teams in the women’s Olympic football tournament to 16 in 2028, a move which will be larger than the men’s twelve team format for the first time. This step demonstrates FIFA’s efforts to develop women’s football worldwide.
With the 2027 Women’s World Cup set to take place in Brazil, the stage is then ready for a thrilling decade of women’s football leading to unprecedented development and visibility of the game. FIFA will officially decide next year the 2031 and 2035 hosts.
