Macron Proposes European Force to Deter Russian Aggression in Ukraine

French President Emmanuel Macron has suggested the creation of a European armed force in Ukraine to prevent further Russian aggression, which would engage if attacked, he said. His comments came after meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Elysee Palace, before a major summit in Paris with 30 countries.

Macron noted that these forces would not be dispatched to the front lines but would push up a containment scheme by possessing strategic positions and back up the Ukraine lasting safety. He underscored that any attempt to attack the European troops, would provoke a response in defence — «serious and firm» –, reaffirming the unwavering commitment of European countries to the sovereignty of Ukraine.

This campaign, supported by U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, is to form an alliance that offers security guarantees further than military aid. But the U.S. has expressed doubt, and President Donald Trump’s administration has shown little interest in European troop deploying in Ukraine.

Macron also announced a new 2 billion euros (2.15 billion) defense package for Ukraine, including missile defense systems and anti-tank missile. Although details of the proposed force remain to be worked out, possible deployments might extend from Ukraine’s central regions to its western frontier.

Backed by increasing number of European countries, the plan constitutes a shift in strategy toward achieving lasting peace without new Russian incursions. The summit will decide on the next phase of creating this new, historic European security arrangement.
