United Nations should immediately take action against Mohammed Yunus, Chief Advisor of Bangladesh, urged prominent Indian rights group , accusing him with sweeping religion-based violence against religious minorities. The New Delhi-based Rights and Risks Analysis Group (RRAG) said Yunus’ refusal to recognize attacks on Hindus, Buddhists and Christians has provided extremist groups with an enviroment to attack, putting minority leaders in increasing danger.
In a petition to UN Secretary General, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (CHR), and international human rights organizations, RRAG accused that Yunus trivialised communal violence when terms of incidents are reduced to personal vendetta or crimes committed randomly. His words, they say, downplay the gravity of crimes that include murder, vandalism and religious persecution.
The Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council in the beginning of this month reported 92 attacks against minorities and indigenous groups in two months alone, with 11 murders and 25 readings of attack on temples. In spite of these grim statistics, Yunus said on March 25 that initial police investigations did not turn up communal motives, claiming that the violence was born out of personal conflicts or social grievances.
RRAG Director Suhas Chakma denounced Yunus’ position, referring to a UNHCHR report that documented targeted attacks on Ahmadiyya Muslims, Hindus, and indigenous people. Chakma noted that Yunus’ dismissive behavior creates impunity and called upon the international community to act before the situation gets worse.
