Deadly Wildfires Sweep South Korea: 4 Dead, 9,000 Rescuers Battle Blazes

At least four people have died and six more are injured as enormous wildfires spread across southern South Korea, confirmed the Korea Forest Service on Sunday.

Over 9,000 emergency responders and 105 aircraft have been deployed to fight the blowing out of control fires, which have destroyed 16,000 acres of forestland, hurt properties and even engulfed a historic temple.

Acting President Choi Sang-mok asked authorities to put the priority on the safety of firefighters in fighting the flames and pledged that all available resources would be used to bring down the situation.

I ask the Korea Forest Service to examine on the safety of personnel who are in charge of dousing wildfire at the air or land, Choi pointed out in a disaster management meeting.

TP News cited media outlet Yonhap News Agency as reporting that firefighters and a public servant are among those reported dead. Over 1,500 residents have had to flee their homes as dry, gusty conditions keep the flames going.

Authorities are on high alert as firefighters battle on day and night to prevent more damage. In the face of persisting weather difficulties, authorities are taking up the pace to safeguard lives and property.

The current wildfire disaster is one of the most severe in South Korea in recent years, and an call for climate-related disasters and disaster response improvement.
