Philippines Pushes for India to Join ‘Squad’ Amid Rising Tensions with China

In a daring diplomatic gesture, Philippines is pushing for India’s accession to the “Squad,” a maritime security pact between Australia, Japan, the Philippines and the United States. The issue was brought up Wednesday by General Romeo S. Brawner, Chief of Staff of the Philippines Armed Forces, during Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi.

Labelling China as the “common enemy” between India and the Philippines, Gen. Brawner stressed for closer China deterrence against China’s rising influence in region of South China Sea. India joining the Squad will be discussed, directly during a talk I will be having with the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Anil Chauhan.

Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, addressing alongside Gen. Brawner, noted the volatile nature of today’s security threats. He highlighted the emphasis of the Indian Navy on self-reliance and the need to benefit from international partners through bilateral and multilateral relationship.

Philippines, which got the first batch of India’s BrahMos cruise missiles in April 2024, is also considering other military procurements from India. Gen. Brawner said China’s plans to control the South China Sea stay a danger, calling for a mixed local response.
