Pentagon’s New Policy on Transgender Troops Sparks Legal Battles

The military of the United States is to be put on notice to pin down and start clearing out transgender service members within the next 60 days–a decision that has sparked a firestorm of controversy, and legal challenges.

On Wednesday, the Pentagon issued a new memo required military services to write their policy for determining whether troops identified as possessing gender dysphoria.

No sooner than late April will any removals begin, Wednesday’s guidance said The services will also have to come up with a way for personnel who meet the criteria to be identified by March 26.

The move comes after a signing of an executive order by President Donald Trump to put into effect the new ban against transgender service members entering the armed forces. The administration says that gender dysphoria and the care for it do not measure up to combat readiness, military standards”.

The downside, however, is the policy discriminates against critics. Transgender troops: The different sides of an already delicate issue as advocacy groups and civil rights organizations across the nation say they plan to fight any directive in court, saying it tramples on the rights of openly gay men and women.

About 4,200 active-duty, Guard and Reserve members may be among those effected, military officials say but roster figures could increase.

The experts see a long fight, with some cases heading to the high court. At the same time, transgender troops are left in limbo as the Pentagon rushes to enforce.
