Tragedy struck UPMC Memorial Hospital in York, Pa., on Saturday when a hostage scenario played out, resulting in one lawman dying and several others being hurt. The gunman, identified as 49-year-old Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, roamed into to the hospital’s intensive care unit and took medical staff hostage before exchanging gunfire that would prove fatal with law enforcement.

Officer Andrew Duarte of the West York Borough Police Department was killed in the incident. Duarte, a dedicated law enforcement professional with back ground service in Denver, Colorado had some recognition detail among his service accomplishments – a “hero award” from Mothers Against Drunk Driving in 2021.
Per authorities, Archangel-Ortiz tried out pinning down a female staff member with zip ties before authorities were able to get Him. When the shots continued, the suspect died, as did three people who worked at the hospital, a doctor, a nurse, and a custodian. Other two officers were wounded as well. A fourth hospitalized worker was injured in an effort to get out.
“This is a very sad lose for our community,” York County District Attorney Tim Barker said, who the legal action taken by the police as necessary to prevent and further losses.
