Pope Francis Battles Pneumonia: Vatican Provides Health Update

Pope Francis, 88, is still hospitalized in Rome with pneumonia in both lungs as the Vatican provides an update on his ‘serious’ health. The pope has been at Policlinico Agostino Gemelli since Friday, being treated for a polymicrobial respiratory infection.

A subsequent CT scan confirmed bilateral pneumonia, that necessitated increased medication especially corticosteroids and antibiotics. Even while in a weakened state, the Vatican assured the public that Francis is in good spirits, between periods of rest, reading his daily prayer and reading.

Vatican stated that infection has set against the background of bronchiectasis and asthmatic bronchitis, complicating the disease course. There is currently no discharge date set, officials stress though that an “appropriate” hospitalization is required.

In support of his illness, all current official audiences have been suspended. On Tuesday, Pope received the Eucharist and thanked for worldwide prayers and solidarity.

Pope Francis has suffered a number of health problems in recent years, including recurrent respiratory infections, and the flu, as well as gastrointestinal surgery. His walking is also impacted, frequently relies on a walker or a wheelchair due to back and knee pain.

The pope’s health is becoming increasingly worrisome with the Catholic Jubillee coming up, an event to last a year which is expected to draw in millions to Rome. Nonetheless, in his recent autobiography HOPE Francis dismissed worries, saying “The fact is, quite simply, that I am old.”

As the world keeps him in prayers, the Vatican closely keeps tabs on his health.
