A fatal mishap killed 55 individuals as a bus caused by an unknown reason fell from a highway into a deep gorge outside Guatemala City early on Monday. A bus coming from Progreso northeast of the city dropped 35 meters (115 feet) when it fell into a stream polluted by sewage then faced upside down with partial submersion.

The bus crashed during early morning hours after another multiple collision vehicle accident which caused it to fly off the road and dive into the steep ravine beneath a bridge according to firefighting spokesperson Edwin Villagran. The rescue team found 53 deceased bodies where the accident took place followed by the confirmation of two hospital-declared fatalities among passengers. The volunteer firefighter spokesman Óscar Sánchez confirmed that children were among those who lost their lives in the accident.
President Bernardo Arévalo communicated his sympathy for the bereaved families as he ordered the entire country to observe a mourning period. The Public Ministry’s investigators continue to find the definitive reason behind the accident as additional people sustain serious wounds following the crash.
Every citizen of Mexico and the rest of the world remains shocked about this tragic event that has exposed an immediate need for better road safety throughout the entire region.
