Massive Landslide in China: 1 Dead, 28 Missing as Rescuers Battle Harsh Conditions

The nightmare situation in China’s southwestern Sichuan province led to one death while 28 people remain unaccounted for as emergency rescue personnel continue their search for survivors under unfavorable environmental conditions.

Heavy rainfall generated the landslide that hit Jinping village in Junlian county on Saturday and produced a debris flow that covered the area with ten homes and a manufacturing plant along half a mile. The officials believe the collapsed area extends across twenty-four soccer fields and moved houses and infrastructure to entirely different areas.

Search and rescue personnel totaling almost 1000 persons use drones and life-detection radar systems to search through the destroyed areas for any survivors. The state broadcaster CCTV reported rescue services extracted two injured people but complete successful evacuations of 360 residents from the area.

A disaster emerged from rainfall combined with geological instability which has produced concerns about potentially additional collapses. Liu Guozhong who served as Vice Premier undertook an inspection of the site where he stressed that scientists needed to perform safety evaluations to safeguard rescue crews and stop potential additional disasters.

Continuous rainfall and new landslide occurrences create extra obstacles for the rescue efforts in locations which were already extremely dangerous. Eighty million yuan which translates to $11 million has been set aside by the Chinese government for relief and recovery operations.

The country of China faces repeated risks from landslides which are triggered by devastating weather conditions and unsafe building techniques. According to recent reports this disaster matches earlier incidents like the deadly landslide that occurred in Yunnan province last year which took the lives of many people.

The search efforts maintain their operation even though families and emergency responders still believe more people can be rescued from this catastrophe. 🚨
