China Landslide Buries 10 Houses; Rescuers Search for 29 Missing

The search for at least 29 missing people continues rapidly in China’s Sichuan province because a catastrophic landslide destroyed Jinping Village in Junlian County on Saturday and covered ten houses and a production facility.

The emergency response team consisting of firefighters and other personnel arrived at the site while saving two survivors from the disaster. The news broadcast from CCTV reported that safe evacuations of 200 residents had been conducted by authorities before additional casualties could occur.

The officials identified heavy rain combined with geological instability as the primary causes of the disaster that generated a massive debris flow measuring 1.2 km (0.7 miles) and surpassing 100000 cubic meters (3.5 million cubic feet) in size.

The locals who stayed in the vicinity heard repeated rockfalls between the middle of 2024 and ongoing reports described these sounds as explosive as firecrackers. The geological survey team visited this region during the previous year before identifying possible dangers on the site.

The Chinese president Xi Jinping demanded maximum effort from officials in rescuing missing people and reducing fatality numbers. Li Qiang issued two directives first to investigate geological risks in the area then to order official safety evacuations of vulnerable people before another incident can happen.

China will employ 80 million yuan ($11 million) to fund their recovery operations.

Heavy rains and unsafe construction activities regularly cause landslides to occur within China’s territory. A similar landslide event at Yunnan province killed numerous people during the previous year.

Family members join officials to maintain hope for more individuals to escape death from the destructive event.
