China to Gain as U.S.-E.U. Trade War Looms, Warns E.U. Foreign Minister

European Union foreign affairs head Kaja Kallas declared on Monday that China would gain from any potential trade war occurring between the United States and the European Union. Kalls responded after President Donald Trump made clear he was considering to impose tariffs against the E.U.

During a session with Brussels media before an EU Ambassadors’ meeting Kallas explained that Chinese businesses would triumph if the United States opts for a trade war against the E.U. We are very interlinked. As much as America requires our support we require its support in return. Tariffs according to her analysis would increase product prices which would strike both consumers and workforce employment rates adversely.

Trump declared trade restrictions through his announcement on Saturday while targeting Canada together with China and Mexico. During questioning about possible tariffs directed at the United Kingdom Trump shifted attention to the European Union pointing out that the bloc maintains more than $4.3 trillion surplus with the United States according to his estimation although EU data reveals a €155.8 billion goods surplus and a €104 billion services deficit for 2023.

During his interview Trump stated the car industry & farming sector in the E.U. operated as an “atrocity” against the U.S. while blaming the bloc’s fleet-footed business dealings against American markets. He also saw potential to settle problems with Britain’s stance which he described as being in the wrong.

Kallas confirmed that the E.U. was taking steps to be ready for trade war scenarios yet emphasized that no nation will achieve any benefits from such disputes. Global markets have already shown worry following these remarks since analysts believe economic consequences will increase if tensions intensify.
