The government of Paraguay under President Santiago Peña has set its sights on international sports engagements as the country will seek to host the 2030 Youth Olympics by sending representatives to the International Olympic Committee headquarters on January 30, 2025. The South American country will use hosting games for the opening of the 2030 FIFA World Cup to establish itself as a premier destination for international sporting championships.
President Peña expressed after his meeting with IOC President Thomas Bach that Paraguay aims to establish itself as the global center for major sports activities. The Youth Olympics which took place in Buenos Aires in 2018 with 4,000 athletes playing 32 sports matches the organizational strengths of Paraguay before it launches the 2025 Junior Pan-American Games.
Seven million people make up the population of Paraguay though the country remains obscure to most worldwide citizens. The Paraguayan government acknowledges international unfamiliarity with their country by admitting that its name attracts curiosity because it is both foreign and intriguing to many people. The delivery of international events and the 2031 Pan-Am Games bidding process provides an exclusive chance for the country to enhance its worldwide recognition.
The Paraguayan national soccer team achieved international prominence through its medals at the 2004 Olympics and at other sports events which improved Paraguay’s reputation recognition globally. The 2030 World Cup will split hosting responsibilities between six countries where Paraguay serves as one of the three co-hosting nations together with Argentina and Uruguay before the games shift toward Europe and Africa.
The progress made by Peña’s initiatives recently received support from FIFA President Gianni Infantino who scheduled an official meeting to be held in Asunción in May 2025. Surrounding authorities will soon make a decision regarding the 2030 Youth Olympics while Paraguay competes against Denmark and India and Thailand for the hosting rights. Through his statements Peña demonstrated appreciation while expressing hope for Paraguay becoming the host country of the Youth Olympics.
