Passenger screening at Bacha Khan International Airport in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province revealed Pakistan’s initial Mpox case of 2025. Border Health Services staff under the Health Ministry identified this patient who traveled to Gulf countries at age 35.
Public health protection remains the top priority for the government according to health coordinator Dr. Mukhtar Bharth who added “We are implementing effective protective measures.” All international health standards guide airport screening operations through robust screening protocols at every location.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa health advisor Ehtesham Ali announced the confirmation of a case which led to public health personnel moving the patient to Police Services Hospital. Testing results at the Public Health Reference Lab validated that the patient had Mpox infection.
Active contact tracing plays an important role in controlling virus spread. The authorities have obtained airport passenger information to trace individuals exposed at Peshawar Airport. District health officers receive alerts from the health department after data transmissions complete according to Ali.
The area has recorded ten Mpox cases this year after reporting two instances in 2023 and seven more in 2024 and one case during 2025. The Health Ministry reported eight Mpox cases according to its information released in December 2024.
Health authorities worldwide have strengthened mpox disease examination and preventive measures at key border controls because of rising global health concerns.
