A quake of 6.1 magnitude hit near Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley in early hours on Friday, sending residents into a tizzy. The quake occurred at 2:51 am in Sundarijal in Sindhupalchowk district, around 65 km to the north-east of Kathmandu as reported by National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre.
Although reports are that the earthquake was felt strongly in and around Kathmandu, no initial reports of damage, casualties. The situation is under close watch by the authorities and assessment teams have been deployed to the affected location.
Nepal having being placed in Seismic Zone IV and V is indeed very prone to earthquakes due to its locational prominence of Seismic active tectonic plates The country has had some major quakes in the past, but this one was the biggest one in the country when it happened, it was a 7.8 magnitude in 2015 which it killed over 9,000 and also destroyed more than million structures.
Seismologists have been saying for years that Nepal is still prone to big quakes. Resident have been put on high alert and told to exercise caution. Additionally, reports indicate that tremors from the quake were oppressed in North India and Tibet.
The public is advised to remain on high alert in case of aftershocks. Emergency responders are being held in readiness for public safety.
