4.4-Magnitude Quake Jolts Naples, Causes Minor Damage and Injuries

11 hospitalised as 4.4 magnitude quake hits Naples, southern Italy, early on Thursday (March 13, 2025). The most grievous injury occurred when a section of the ceiling fell, causing contusions, local officials said.

The quake, located offshore near Pozzuoli, a townney around Naples, was the most powerful recorded in the region of the Phlegrean, an extensive volcanic back, since a similar quake last May. Residents were woken from their sleep by the seismic shock, compelling many of them to run into the streets in fear.

Mayor Gaetano Manfredi confirmed three buildings, a church, and a seven-story residential complex, to be declared unfit for use due to structural damage. Some schools were also shut as precaution while inspectors checked buildings for further risks.

‘In total, 11 people were taken to hospital’ – Manfredi said. One woman was hurt by falling debris and other were hurt from broken glass. We are watching the situation minute-by-minute.

Seismologists pick up heightened movement beneath Phlegrean Fields in recent days. The area, with a population of 500,000, lies in danger because of its volcanic and seismic potential. The experts say that the ground has risen by 1.3 meters since 2006 – more than it was before the last major event in 1984, which forced the evacuation of 40,000 people.

Authorities keep watching seismic activities, asking for immediate actions to secure frail buildings, mainly because the glasses have been calmly fading away for months.
